WOMAN BY WOMAN

The Little Kings is a portrait series created in Khayelitsha, featuring twelve young men from the Little Lions programme. Each participant embodies a defining characteristic — kindness, confidence, bravery, and others that speak to strength of spirit and emotional depth.

Photographed along the shoreline of Khayelitsha, the series situates these young men between land and water — a meeting place of reflection and renewal. Through their chosen gestures, posture, and gaze, they step into versions of themselves that honour both who they are and who they are becoming.

Launched during Mental Health Awareness Month, The Little Kings reimagines narratives of Black boyhood and masculinity, centering tenderness and self-affirmation in spaces often defined by survival. The work celebrates the quiet power of emotional expression — a visual anthem for healing, dignity, and hope.
