LIFE IN MY 501’S

In celebration of Levi’s 150th anniversary, PhotoVogue has partnered with Levi’s for the “Your 501® Story” global open call, inviting photographers to submit images that capture the personal connection people have with the iconic 501® jean. Out of hundreds of submissions, my photo story, Life in My 501’s, was selected to be featured in the digital exhibition, highlighting how Levi’s 501® jean transcends its role as just clothing, becoming a canvas for personal expression and identity.

The Levi’s 501® jean has long been more than just a piece of clothing. It’s a symbol of rebellion, self-expression, and individuality. For many, the 501® has witnessed life’s most pivotal moments, becoming more than fabric stitched together it becomes a part of your story. The exhibition, which includes 150 captivating photographs from around the world, celebrates this iconic jean and its role in telling personal, intimate stories through the lens of global photographers.

My contribution to this collection, Life in My 501’s, was shot in Woodstock, Cape Town one of the city’s most vibrant and ever-evolving neighborhoods. The area, known for its rich history and diverse community, became the perfect backdrop to tell my story of connection to the Levi’s 501®. Through this photo series, I wanted to capture not only the physical presence of the jean but also the stories, experiences, and emotions that they carry with them.

The images are rooted in the pulse of Woodstock: from the street art that lines the walls, to the bustling markets, and the quiet moments of reflection in the city’s nooks and crannies. Each photograph in the series is an ode to both the personal and collective stories that the 501® jean represents. It speaks to how clothing, and in particular the 501®, connects people to the places and moments that shape their identity.

The 501® jean has always been a timeless garment, transcending generations, cultures, and trends. It’s a constant, a piece of history, and at the same time, a blank canvas for new stories. My series reflects this duality: showing how something as simple as denim can carry so much weight in terms of identity, belonging, and expression.

For me, Life in My 501’s is not just about showcasing a piece of fashion it’s about showcasing how personal expression can be found in the most unexpected places. The images I created are a reflection of who we are, and who we continue to become, with our jeans being a silent yet powerful witness to our evolution.

Having my work featured by PhotoVogue is an incredible honor, especially as part of such a prestigious collaboration with Levi’s. It’s a reminder of the importance of documenting the stories around us whether through fashion, art, or everyday life. The 501® isn’t just a garment; it’s a part of all of our stories.

As we move forward, I’m excited to continue telling stories through my lens and exploring the ways in which clothing just like a photograph can preserve memories, mark milestones, and speak to the essence of who we are.
