District Six Hanover Minstrels is the first minstrel group to be formed within the District Six Area since the forced removal about 60 years ago.We have been actively established since 2005.
The group was formed in the community to deter the youth’s attention from drugs, abuse and crime.
Due to the enthusiasm and interest shown by the children, the minstrel group started a band and band school. All the youth who joined have shown sincere dedication and commitment towards the project.
Hanover street was the road that was created after most of the homes and businesses were demolished from 1966 to 1983 during the forced removals and demolitions after the Group Areas Act of 1950. This is where our club’s name originates from.
The Minstrel Carnival, as an organization, dates back to 1890, but its social roots can be traced back even further to the colonial era.
This is the second year documenting the Minstrels I plan to for the next 8 years.
